The Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) is inviting applications for an Impact Investment Manager (P2) to join its operations team in Amsterdam, offering an international career opportunity for experienced finance and development professionals interested in agriculture, impact investing and sustainable development.

Established in 1989 and headquartered in Amsterdam, the CFC focuses on poverty alleviation and operates as an impact investment fund supporting commodity-dependent developing countries.

According to the organisation, the CFC has helped mobilise more than US$1 billion in investments for SMEs and smallholder farmers while helping connect developed and developing economies in support of global sustainability objectives.

The Impact Investment Manager will therefore work at the intersection of finance, agriculture, commodity value chains and poverty reduction, helping identify and structure investments that can generate both financial and development impact.

Impact Investment Manager Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and work as part of a dynamic investment and technical assistance team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Building and contributing to a strong pipeline of suitable investment opportunities.
  • Assessing opportunities based on impact, risk and financial return.
  • Leading the full execution cycle for trade finance and term loans.
  • Conducting on-site and off-site due diligence.
  • Assessing the social and environmental performance of potential investees.
  • Developing financial models and conducting credit appraisals.
  • Structuring loans and preparing relevant documentation.
  • Monitoring and managing a portfolio of debt investments.
  • Leading legal and commercial discussions with potential investees.
  • Developing and negotiating initial terms and conditions.
  • Supporting the negotiation of legal agreements.
  • Preparing internal and external reports and documentation.
  • Evaluating individual transactions and monitoring the overall investment portfolio.

The role provides an opportunity to directly contribute to investment decisions affecting SMEs and agricultural value chains in developing countries.

Who Can Apply?

The CFC is seeking an experienced investment professional with a strong background in finance, development and agricultural value chains.

Applicants should have an advanced university degree, such as a Master’s degree or higher, in one of the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Business Administration
  • Agribusiness
  • Finance
  • A related discipline

Candidates should also have at least five years of professional experience in a financial and/or development environment. Experience with an impact fund, commercial or development bank, or development finance organisation is particularly relevant.

The successful candidate should demonstrate strong analytical capabilities in finance and credit analysis, together with a sound understanding of accounting standards.

Experience assessing SME business and operational models within the agricultural sector is also important.

Skills and Experience Required

Candidates should have a strong understanding of commodity value chains and the relationship between smallholder agriculture, poverty reduction and impact investment.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Assessing the social and environmental performance of agricultural SMEs.
  • Implementing trade finance and term loan structures.
  • Evaluating financial risks associated with investment projects.
  • Understanding rural development and regenerative agriculture.
  • Knowledge of circular economy and sustainable finance initiatives.
  • Working within multicultural and international environments.
  • Working effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

The CFC is also looking for professionals who are results-oriented, collaborative and able to work effectively in complex stakeholder environments.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, alongside openness to feedback, new ideas and collaboration.

Knowledge of the UN Global Compact principles is considered an advantage.

While English is the working language of the CFC, fluency or proficiency in French is considered a distinct advantage.

Salary and Contract

The Impact Investment Manager position is offered at the ICSC P-2 level, providing compensation based on United Nations grade levels.

The CFC states that the position comes with an attractive compensation package, including a tax-exempt salary and additional benefits.

The initial appointment is for one year on a fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

The successful candidate will work full time and on-site in Amsterdam.
