About the Position
The Research Associate will work closely with Professor Shilpa Aggarwal on research examining agricultural supply chains, rural markets and development economics. In addition to supporting Professor Aggarwal’s projects, the successful candidate will collaborate part-time with agricultural economists involved in the Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA), the impact assessment network of CGIAR.

About Professor Shilpa Aggarwal
Professor Shilpa Aggarwal is a leading development economist whose research focuses on understanding market linkages and economic development in low- and middle-income countries. Her work explores how infrastructure, agricultural markets and public policy shape economic opportunities for rural communities.
Her doctoral research examined the impact of road construction programmes connecting remote villages to nearby markets in India. Her current research spans agricultural supply chains in India and East Africa, alongside studies on domestic trade, microfinance and food policy.
She holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz, an MA from the Delhi School of Economics, and a BA from Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi.
Research Areas and Responsibilities
The Research Associate will contribute to rigorous empirical research by supporting multiple stages of the research process. Key responsibilities include:
- Cleaning, organizing and managing large datasets.
- Conducting quantitative and empirical analysis using Stata and/or R.
- Supporting research on agricultural markets and rural development.
- Collaborating with researchers involved in CGIAR’s SPIA impact assessment network.
- Producing high-quality analytical outputs for academic research and policy engagement.
- Assisting with data management and evidence generation for development economics projects.
The role requires strong analytical thinking, attention to detail and the ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams.
Who Should Apply?
ISB is seeking motivated candidates with a strong interest in economics, public policy and quantitative research. A Master’s degree in Economics or another quantitative discipline is preferred, although exceptional applicants with a Bachelor’s degree will also be considered.
Strong programming ability is essential, particularly in statistical software such as Stata or R. Candidates with previous experience as a Research Assistant or Research Associate will have an added advantage, though prior experience is not mandatory.
