Cardiff University is inviting applications for fully funded doctoral studentships through the Wales Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) for students commencing PhD study in October 2027.
The studentships are open awards, allowing applicants to develop their own research proposals in consultation with an appropriate academic supervisor. Opportunities are available across several social science disciplines, including economics, business and management, linguistics and bilingualism, and other research areas supported by participating Cardiff University schools.
The application deadline is 13 December 2026.
PhD Studentship Details
The WGSSS ESRC DTP studentships support doctoral research at Cardiff University and are designed to provide both financial support and structured research training.
Applicants are encouraged to identify and contact a potential supervisor before submitting their application. Discussing a draft research proposal with an appropriate academic can help applicants establish whether their research interests align with the supervisor’s expertise and the relevant research pathway.
The studentships are expected to begin in October 2027. The duration is normally 3.5 to 4 years of full-time study, or the equivalent for part-time students. The precise duration depends on the student’s previous research experience and training requirements, which are assessed through a Development Needs Analysis.
Both full-time and part-time applications are welcomed, subject to applicable visa requirements.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants should normally hold qualifications or experience equivalent to a UK honours degree at first-class or upper second-class level, or a master’s degree. Candidates from non-traditional academic backgrounds are also encouraged to apply where they can demonstrate appropriate preparation for doctoral study.
Applicants must satisfy the relevant UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) eligibility requirements for doctoral studentship funding.
The opportunity is available to both UK/home and international students. International students can make up to 30% of the WGSSS cohort and will not be required to pay the difference between the UK and international tuition fee rates where the studentship covers the fees.
Cardiff University also states that it is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from candidates across the global community.
Fully Funded PhD Benefits
The ESRC-funded studentship provides substantial financial support for successful candidates.
The funding includes:
- Full tuition fee coverage
- An annual tax-free living stipend in line with UKRI minimum rates
- A current indicative stipend of £21,805 for the 2026–27 academic year
- Access to a Research Training Support Grant
- Potential access to Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) for eligible students with disabilities
International students will not be charged the difference between the UK and international tuition fee rates under the studentship arrangements.
Because stipend rates can change annually, applicants should check the latest UKRI and WGSSS information before applying.
Research in Practice Placement
An important component of the WGSSS doctoral programme is a funded three-month Research in Practice placement.
Students will have the opportunity to undertake their placement in settings such as academia, government or policy organisations, business, or civil society organisations. The placement is intended to provide practical experience and help doctoral researchers connect their academic research with real-world applications.
Assessment and Selection
Applications will be assessed as part of a competitive selection process. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.
As part of the interview, applicants will be required to deliver a five-minute presentation and respond to questions from the selection panel. The interview process is guided by previous practice within the Wales DTP and WGSSS commitments to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Applicants are expected to receive outcomes by the end of March 2027.
Required Application Documents
Applicants must submit a complete application by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The required documents include:
- Completed WGSSS General Studentship Application Form
- Academic CV of no more than two pages
- Two academic or professional references detailing the applicant’s research strengths
- Degree certificates and academic transcripts
- Certified translations where applicable
- Proof of English-language competency where required
The WGSSS application form should be uploaded within the research proposal section of the Cardiff University application.
Applicants should approach their referees themselves and ensure that references are submitted as required.
How to Apply
Candidates should first review the available research areas and identify potential supervisors whose expertise aligns with their proposed research.
Applicants should then develop a strong research proposal and discuss it with a potential supervisor before submitting the formal application.
The application must be submitted through the Cardiff University online postgraduate research application portal. Selecting the “register interest” option does not constitute a formal application.
Applicants must also complete the relevant WGSSS Equality and Diversity Data Form before submitting their application. A separate form may also be required by the host institution.
How to Strengthen the Application
A strong application should demonstrate a clearly defined research problem, appropriate research questions and a convincing explanation of the proposed contribution to the field.
Candidates should ensure that their research proposal is aligned with the expertise of their proposed supervisor and the relevant WGSSS pathway. The academic CV should highlight research experience, relevant qualifications, publications, dissertations, analytical skills and other evidence of preparation for doctoral study.
Applicants should also prepare carefully for the five-minute interview presentation and be ready to explain their research methodology, academic motivation and expected contribution.
