The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is inviting applications for its Economist Program (EP) 2027, a three-year career programme designed for recent PhD graduates and candidates who are within one year of completing a PhD in economics or a related field.
The programme provides economists with an opportunity to work on real-world economic policy challenges affecting the IMF’s 191 member countries. Participants contribute to country work, macroeconomic policy analysis, research and capacity development from the beginning of their assignments.
The 2027 cohort is expected to begin in September 2027 and will be based at IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA.
About the IMF Economist Program
The Economist Program is designed for economists who want to apply rigorous academic research and quantitative analysis to practical economic policy questions.
Participants are hired as economists rather than trainees and take on substantive responsibilities from their first assignment. Over the three-year programme, participants complete two departmental assignments, providing exposure to different policy areas, countries and aspects of the IMF’s work.
After successfully completing the three-year programme, EP participants who demonstrate strong and consistent performance are typically absorbed into IMF departments as open-ended economists through vacancies advertised across departments.
What Economists Will Work On
Responsibilities vary according to the department and assignment. Participants may contribute to several areas of IMF work, including:
- Analysis of economic developments and risks affecting countries or regions
- Article IV consultations and IMF-supported programmes
- Macroeconomic policy analysis and advice
- Fiscal, monetary, exchange-rate and financial-sector policy
- Macroeconomic and financial stability assessments
- Fiscal and external debt sustainability analysis
- Economic governance, trade and regional integration
- Analytical research and policy publications
- Technical assistance and capacity development
- Training and support aimed at strengthening economic institutions
Economists may use economic theory, quantitative techniques, data analysis and research methods to address practical policy questions.
Eligibility Requirements
The IMF Economist Program is aimed at recent PhD graduates and candidates within one year of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field.
Applicants must generally meet the following requirements:
- Hold or be completing a PhD in economics, macroeconomics or a related field
- Be a recent PhD graduate or within one year of completing the degree
- Be under 34 years of age when the programme begins in September 2027
- Be a citizen of an IMF member country
- Have a strong understanding of macroeconomics
- Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English
- Possess strong analytical and quantitative skills
- Demonstrate strong computer and data-analysis skills
The IMF considers candidates from a range of economics specialisations. Applicants do not necessarily need to be specialised exclusively in macroeconomics, but they should have a solid macroeconomic foundation and an interest in applying economic research to policy.
Research and Academic Requirements
Research is an important component of the Economist Program. Participants may collaborate with IMF economists on reports, working papers, policy publications and other research.
Candidates progressing through the selection process may be asked to provide a recent PhD transcript, three academic references and a research paper of publishable standard or one or two dissertation chapters.
Academic references must not be provided by current IMF staff members.
Recruitment and Selection Process
The IMF follows a multi-stage recruitment process for the Economist Program.
Shortlisted candidates may first participate in a 30–40-minute preliminary interview. This stage includes discussion of the candidate’s research and economic topics relevant to the IMF, while also assessing analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills.
Candidates progressing further may be asked to submit supporting academic materials, including their transcript, references and research paper or dissertation chapters.
Selected candidates then participate in an in-person panel interview involving senior IMF economists and a Human Resources representative. A 90-minute written assessment is also used to evaluate written communication and the ability to develop a clear and structured response under time constraints.
The final stage involves review by an internal committee of senior IMF staff.
What the Programme Offers
The three-year structure provides participants with broad professional exposure through two departmental assignments.
Key opportunities include:
- Working on real economic policy issues
- Exposure to IMF country and regional work
- Experience across different policy areas
- Collaboration with experienced economists
- Opportunities to conduct policy-relevant research
- Professional development in macroeconomic policy and surveillance
- Experience in capacity development and technical assistance
- Potential transition into an open-ended IMF economist position after successful completion and strong performance
Visa Support
Candidates who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents or otherwise authorised to work in the United States will generally require a G-4 visa. The IMF provides the documentation required to support the visa application with U.S. authorities.
Applicants should review the official employment and visa information carefully to understand the requirements applicable to their circumstances.
How to Strengthen an Application
Candidates should present their academic research clearly and demonstrate how their economics training can be applied to real-world policy questions.
A strong research paper should demonstrate rigorous economic reasoning, appropriate quantitative methods and the ability to communicate findings clearly. Applicants should also be prepared to discuss their research at a high level during the preliminary interview.
Candidates can further prepare by reviewing IMF work on monetary policy, fiscal policy, balance of payments, financial-sector issues, debt sustainability and other areas relevant to international economic policy.
How to Successfully Apply
Applicants should first confirm that they meet the PhD, age, citizenship, language and technical requirements. They should then prepare their academic materials and ensure that their CV and application accurately reflect their research experience and economics expertise.
Candidates should submit their application through the official IMF careers platform before the stated closing time.
