UNICEF is inviting applications for a Technical Report Writing Consultant – Gender Equality Annual Reports, offering an opportunity for an experienced professional to support the organisation’s global gender equality reporting work.
The consultancy is based administratively in New York Headquarters (NYHQ) but is fully remote with no travel required. The assignment has a duration of 8.5 months, making it an attractive opportunity for senior communications, research, gender equality and international development professionals seeking a remote consultancy with the United Nations.
The position requires a Master’s degree and at least 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience. Applications are open until 13 September 2026.
About UNICEF
UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to protect children’s rights, save lives and help children reach their full potential.
The organisation is currently implementing its Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP) 2026–2029, an ambitious framework designed to accelerate progress on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
The plan focuses on achieving positive change for adolescent girls while integrating gender equality priorities into policies, budgets, systems and programmes. It also includes institutional strengthening objectives aimed at making UNICEF a more gender-responsive organisation.
The Technical Report Writing Consultant will support the Gender Equality Section within the Global Programme Division in producing key reports linked to this work.
About the Consultancy
The selected consultant will support the compilation and drafting of major written products that fulfil UNICEF’s institutional and interagency reporting obligations.
The assignment covers three significant reporting products.
The first is the report on the UN System-Wide Action Plan, which tracks the performance of UN entities on gender equality for the Chief Executives Board for Coordination.
The second is the Annual Report on progress on the Gender Equality Action Plan, which is submitted to the UNICEF Executive Board alongside the Executive Director’s Annual Report.
The third is the Global Annual Results Report, which is intended primarily for donors, partners and the general public.
These reports serve different audiences and must bring together information from multiple sources while meeting strict formats and deadlines. The consultant will therefore need exceptional writing, editing, synthesis and coordination capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
The Technical Report Writing Consultant will play a central role in transforming complex information from different sources into high-quality institutional reports.
The assignment will involve compiling and drafting written content while ensuring that reports are coherent, accurate and appropriate for their intended audiences.
Because the reports involve contributions from multiple teams and sources, the consultant will need to synthesise large amounts of information efficiently and maintain consistency across different sections and reporting products.
The role also requires the ability to work within tight timelines and rapid turnaround requirements.
Strong independent working skills will be important, while the consultant must also collaborate effectively with colleagues working across an international, multicultural and interdisciplinary environment.
Who Can Apply?
UNICEF requires applicants to hold a Master’s degree in one of several relevant disciplines, including:
- Social Sciences
- Gender Studies
- International Relations or International Affairs
- Public Policy
- Communications
Candidates must also have a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience.
A particularly important requirement is demonstrated excellence in technical and report writing, with specific experience producing reports addressing gender-related issues.
Experience covering gender and health or gender and education would be especially relevant.
Applicants should ideally have experience working within an international agency, United Nations organisation or another international institution.
Skills and Competencies
Strong written communication skills are at the heart of this consultancy.
The successful candidate must be capable of producing high-quality reports for institutional and international audiences and working with information from numerous contributors.
The ability to work independently is essential, but candidates must also demonstrate strong collaboration and relationship-building skills.
UNICEF also requires applicants to demonstrate adherence to Do No Harm principles and ethical standards.
Proficiency with common digital workplace tools, including MS Windows, Microsoft PowerPoint and SharePoint, is required.
Because the consultancy involves several important reporting deadlines, the ability to organise work efficiently and deliver high-quality outputs under pressure will be essential.
Full fluency in English is mandatory. Working knowledge of French or Spanish would be an advantage.
Previous experience with UNICEF, particularly in areas involving children’s rights, women’s and girls’ empowerment or gender equality, is also considered desirable.
