GIZ Kenya is inviting applications for a Junior Technical Advisor – Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys) position in Nairobi, Kenya.
The opportunity is designed for professionals with experience in agriculture, livestock development, climate change, natural resource management, rural development or related fields.
The role will support the implementation of the Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys) programme, a global initiative launched by GIZ in 2024 with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The position provides an opportunity to contribute to work focused on sustainable and climate-resilient livestock systems while engaging with government institutions, research organisations, development partners, civil society and private-sector stakeholders.
About the GIZ LiveSys Programme
Livestock production plays an important role in livelihoods and food security across Africa, particularly in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas. At the same time, unsustainable livestock production can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.
The LiveSys programme seeks to support the transformation of livestock systems by strengthening financing and policy instruments that can enable more sustainable and climate-resilient approaches.
The programme works with global, regional and national partners, including organisations such as AU-IBAR, ILRI, CGIAR partners, the African Development Bank, World Bank and IFAD.
Its work covers four broad areas: advocacy and agenda setting, strengthening the capacity of African stakeholders, global knowledge exchange and networking, and mobilising financial resources for sustainable livestock systems.
Junior Technical Advisor Responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide technical, coordination, organisational and administrative support to the LiveSys project while working closely with the Technical Advisor and wider project team.
Responsibilities will include supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of project activities.
The Junior Technical Advisor will also contribute to stakeholder engagement, capacity development, knowledge management and communication among project partners.
On the technical side, the role will support activities relating to:
- Sustainable livestock systems
- Climate resilience
- Biodiversity
- Rangeland management
- Land restoration
- Climate policy
- Agricultural development
The position will also involve researching, analysing and synthesising technical information for concept notes, policy briefs, training materials and presentations.
Capacity Development and Knowledge Management
An important component of the position involves helping organise and document learning and stakeholder engagement activities.
The Junior Technical Advisor will support the organisation of workshops, trainings, webinars, stakeholder consultations and learning events.
The successful applicant will also document project activities and assist with progress, donor and monitoring reports.
Other duties include compiling project results and indicators, maintaining supporting documentation and helping ensure information flows effectively between project partners.
Planning, Coordination and Administration
The role also includes practical project coordination and administrative responsibilities.
These may include supporting activity planning, logistics, procurement, consultant arrangements and travel arrangements in accordance with GIZ procedures.
The Junior Technical Advisor will also support budget preparation, expenditure tracking and activity monitoring.
The position requires careful follow-up of deliverables, action points and activities to help ensure that project implementation remains on schedule.
Stakeholder Engagement
The successful candidate will help support collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders.
These include government institutions, AU-IBAR, research organisations, development partners, civil society organisations and private-sector actors.
The role will involve coordinating follow-up actions and deliverables arising from meetings, workshops and consultations.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills will therefore be important for working effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Economics or a related field.
Candidates should also have relevant academic or professional exposure to areas such as sustainable livestock systems, climate change, agricultural policy, natural resource management or rural development.
At least three years of relevant professional experience is required. Experience may come from livestock development, agriculture, climate change, natural resource management, rural development or related areas.
Knowledge of agriculture, livestock, rural development or agri-food systems will be an advantage.
Applicants should demonstrate strong skills in stakeholder engagement, communication, report writing, documentation and project coordination. Experience supporting workshops, trainings, consultations and other project activities is also relevant.
Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili are required, alongside proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual collaboration tools.
Strong organisational, analytical and research skills, attention to detail, intercultural awareness and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are also expected.
