The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) has announced a recruitment call for a Programme Officer (Coalitions Project) to support the implementation of its Sustainable Coalitions at Local Government Level in South Africa initiative. The fixed-term position is based in Durban, South Africa, with the successful candidate expected to commence work on 1 September 2026.

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African civil society organization dedicated to promoting peace, dialogue, mediation, and institutional development across Africa. Through research, policy engagement, and capacity-building initiatives, ACCORD works to advance constructive conflict resolution as an alternative to violence and prolonged conflict.

About the Position

The Programme Officer will support the implementation of a research project focused on strengthening sustainable coalitions within local government in South Africa. Working under the supervision of the Researcher and alongside the Research Unit, the successful candidate will coordinate project activities, provide administrative and logistical support, and contribute to the delivery of research outputs.

The appointment is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will support a range of programme implementation activities, including:

  • Coordinating project activities, workshops, seminars, and training sessions
  • Providing administrative and logistical support, including scheduling, travel arrangements, procurement, and venue coordination
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement and project communications
  • Preparing, formatting, and organizing reports, presentations, and project documentation
  • Maintaining accurate project records, databases, and documentation
  • Monitoring project progress and tracking deliverables
  • Following up on actions arising from meetings and events
  • Providing general programme support to the Researcher and Research Unit
  • Performing additional duties assigned by the supervisor

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should possess a strong academic background relevant to governance and public policy.

Educational requirement:

  • A postgraduate qualification in Political Science, International Relations, or another related field relevant to governance, peace, and security

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Interest in governance, coalition politics, or local government
  • Strong organizational, coordination, and administrative skills
  • Good written and verbal communication abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Fluency in English

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • Experience supporting projects, programmes, or events
  • Knowledge of an additional South African official language

Salary and Contract

ACCORD will offer a competitive salary package based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with an anticipated start date of 1 September 2026.
