The Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), in collaboration with the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), has opened applications for the Science Academies’ Summer Research Fellowship Program 2027. This prestigious fellowship offers undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated programme students, as well as college and university teachers, the opportunity to undertake fully funded summer research under the guidance of leading scientists across India.
The programme aims to nurture future researchers by providing hands-on research experience in science, engineering, mathematics and related disciplines. Applications must be submitted online by 30 November 2026.
About the Summer Research Fellowship Program
The Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP) is one of India’s most respected research training initiatives. Selected participants are paired with Academy-approved scientists and faculty members at universities and research institutions, where they undertake a supervised research project during the summer.
The fellowship is designed to strengthen research skills, expose participants to cutting-edge scientific work and encourage careers in research and higher education.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is open to both students and teachers.
Eligible students include those enrolled in:
- BS / BSc (Second Year)
- BSc (Research) (Third Year)
- BStat / BMath (Second Year)
- BPharm (Third and Fourth Year)
- BE / BTech / BCA (Second and Third Year)
- BArch (Second to Fourth Year)
- MSc, MS, MTech, MPharm, MVSc and other eligible postgraduate programmes (First Year)
- Integrated MSc, MS, MTech, MBBS and BVSc programmes
- Integrated PhD (First and Second Year)
- Dual-degree programmes in engineering and science
Eligible teachers must currently be teaching at a recognised college or university.
Please note that PhD students are not eligible to apply.
Eligibility Requirements
Student applicants must have an average of at least 65% marks in core subjects from Class X up to their latest completed examination. Languages are excluded when calculating the average.
Additional eligibility conditions include:
- Only one application may be submitted.
- Applicants who have previously received the fellowship twice are not eligible.
- Teachers are exempt from the minimum marks requirement.
The Academies reserve the right to cancel fellowships if false information is provided during the application process.
What Does the Fellowship Offer?
Successful applicants receive the opportunity to work directly with distinguished researchers approved by the three Science Academies. Participants gain practical experience in laboratory research, theoretical investigations or other scientific projects within their chosen discipline.
The programme provides valuable exposure to advanced research methods while allowing fellows to build professional relationships with leading scientists and research institutions across India.
Required Application Materials
Applications must be completed online through the official portal. Before starting the application, candidates should prepare scanned copies of all required academic records.
Applicants must submit:
- Personal and academic information
- Scanned mark sheets from Class X to the latest examination (JPEG format)
- A 150–250 word research write-up
- Contact details of a current teacher (students)
- Publications, if applicable (teachers)
The research write-up should describe a specific research interest, the experiment or theory the applicant hopes to explore and what they wish to achieve through the fellowship. The Academies specifically state that this section must be original and must not be copied from other sources.
Important Instructions
Applicants should carefully follow the online submission guidelines to avoid disqualification. The Academies have issued several important instructions:
- Do not submit hard copies of applications or mark sheets.
- Upload mark sheets in JPEG format, with each file not exceeding 700 KB.
- Avoid using special scientific characters that the application system cannot process.
- Complete all mandatory fields marked with an asterisk.
Student applicants will also need to nominate one current teacher, who will be contacted directly by the Academy to provide a recommendation letter.
Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by the participating Science Academies, and successful candidates are matched with approved research guides based on their academic interests and available research opportunities.
All selection decisions are made solely by the Academies, and applicants are encouraged to submit accurate and complete information, as any false declaration may result in cancellation of the fellowship and recovery of any financial support already provided.
