Work Remotely as a Strategic Communications Consultant at Funding Africa | Remote Consultancy 2026

Funding Africa is seeking an experienced Strategic Communications Consultant to join its growing strategic communications practice and support a portfolio of African nonprofit and social-impact clients.

This is a part-time, strategy-led consultancy for a communications professional who can go beyond content production to help organizations clarify their positioning, strengthen their narratives, communicate their impact and improve their ability to attract funding, partnerships and influence.

The consultant will work remotely, with preference for candidates based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, or Nairobi, Kenya.

The initial engagement is for three months, beginning in September 2026, with strong potential for extension as the practice grows.

The application deadline is 26 August 2026 at 5:00 PM EAT.

About Funding Africa

Funding Africa is a strategy and advisory firm working with ambitious African social-impact organizations during periods of growth and transition.

The firm works with organizations whose quality and ambition may have outpaced the way they position themselves, communicate their value, approach funders or equip their teams to tell a coherent story about their impact.

Its strategic communications work sits at the intersection of organizational positioning, narrative, fundraising and influence.

Funding Africa helps organizations clarify what they want to be known for, communicate their expertise and impact with greater authority, and develop communications strategies and assets that can support funding, partnerships and influence.

As the organization expands its strategic communications practice, it is looking for an experienced consultant who can contribute both to individual client assignments and the longer-term growth of the practice.

About the Role

The Strategic Communications Consultant will work across client engagements involving communications strategy, organizational positioning, messaging, thought leadership, fundraising communications and high-value communications assets.

This is not primarily a day-to-day content management or social media role.

Instead, the successful consultant will be expected to examine complex organizational strategies, interview stakeholders, analyze existing communications and evidence, identify underlying strategic issues and translate findings into clear recommendations, narratives and client-ready materials.

Initially, the consultant will work closely with Funding Africa’s Founder and Managing Director, who will provide overall strategic direction and lead key client relationships.

As the consultant develops familiarity with the organization’s approach, they will be expected to take increasing ownership of client workstreams and engagements.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications, Research and Positioning

The consultant will conduct communications, positioning and narrative audits across organizational strategies, websites, donor materials, reports and other communications.

Responsibilities will also include researching client sectors, audiences, peer organizations, funder landscapes and relevant trends.

The consultant will support and eventually lead stakeholder interviews, discovery sessions and selected workshops, while synthesizing research, evidence and stakeholder perspectives into strategic insights and recommendations.

An important part of the role will be identifying gaps between how an organization currently communicates and how it needs to be understood to support its strategy, fundraising and growth.

The consultant will also contribute to communications strategies connecting organizational priorities with audience, positioning, narrative and channel decisions.

Narrative and Messaging

The successful candidate will develop and refine organizational narratives, messaging frameworks, value propositions, audience-specific messages and positioning statements.

They will need to translate complex programmatic, technical and organizational information into language that is clear and compelling without losing important nuance.

The consultant will also help clients communicate their expertise, evidence and African leadership with clarity and authority, while avoiding generic development-sector narratives.

Practical messaging guidance will be developed to help teams communicate consistently across different markets, channels and audiences.

Strategic Communications Assets

The consultant will lead or support the development of high-quality communications materials, including:

  • Organizational and fundraising decks
  • Website messaging and copy
  • Donor and partnership materials
  • Cases for support
  • Case studies and impact narratives
  • Thought leadership articles and briefs
  • Leadership communications and speaking materials
  • Communications toolkits and implementation guides
  • Reports and knowledge products

The consultant may work alongside designers, web developers, researchers and other specialists, while ensuring that final outputs remain aligned with the agreed strategy and narrative.

Client Engagement and Implementation

The role includes participating in client meetings, stakeholder interviews, workshops and presentations.

The consultant will present findings and recommendations confidently, manage assigned workstreams from research through to client-ready drafts, and incorporate feedback while maintaining strategic discipline.

They will also support client teams to understand and apply the strategies, messaging frameworks and tools developed through engagements.

Strong organization will be important, including proactive management of timelines, working documents and deliverables.

Who Can Apply?

Funding Africa expects the strongest candidates to have approximately 5–8+ years of relevant professional experience in strategic communications, international development, philanthropy, social impact, brand or narrative strategy, journalism, fundraising communications or a related field.

The ideal candidate should be an exceptional writer and editor who can make complex ideas clear and compelling.

Strong research, analytical and synthesis skills are also essential, particularly the ability to identify what matters across large amounts of information.

Candidates should understand the difference between communications that are simply well written and communications that are strategically effective.

Experience working with nonprofits, social-impact organizations, funders, governments or other development-sector actors will be important.

An understanding of African development contexts is also required. Funding Africa is particularly interested in candidates who can communicate African expertise and leadership without relying on reductive or externally imposed narratives.

Experience working across multiple African markets, with international funders, or on communications directly connected to fundraising and resource mobilization would be particularly valuable.

Working Relationship

This is a part-time consultancy requiring approximately two days per week, with flexibility to increase as the communications portfolio grows.

The initial engagement will last three months, starting in September 2026, with strong potential for extension.

Funding Africa is looking for someone with predictable availability who can provide continuity across client engagements, many of which may run for several months.

The successful consultant will report to the Managing Director and work alongside Funding Africa team members and specialist partners.

The organization is particularly interested in someone who sees the potential for a longer-term relationship and is excited about helping shape and grow its strategic communications practice.

Professional Standards

The consultant will be expected to maintain strict client confidentiality, meet agreed deadlines and communicate proactively about capacity, risks and challenges.

They must maintain organized working files and uphold a high standard of professionalism in all client interactions.

Client and Funding Africa intellectual property must remain confidential and cannot be used externally without prior written approval.

Funding Africa uses AI and other digital tools where they can improve quality and efficiency. Consultants are expected to use these tools thoughtfully while retaining responsibility for judgment, accuracy, fact-checking, voice, strategic relevance and final editorial quality.

Compensation and Application Process

Compensation will be agreed based on experience, availability and the final scope of the consultancy.

Applicants must complete the Funding Africa application form by 26 August 2026 at 5:00 PM EAT.

The application requires:

  • A CV and LinkedIn profile
  • A brief note explaining interest in the role, current availability and what the applicant is seeking in their next consulting engagement
  • Two to three relevant work samples demonstrating strategic communications thinking and writing

Applications must be submitted through the Google Form. Applications submitted by email, LinkedIn message or other channels will not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview and practical case discussion.
