ICFJ Foundational Learning Journalism Initiative 2026: Reporting on Literacy and Numeracy in Kenya, Senegal and South Africa

Deadline: May 10, 2026

Applications are open for the ICFJ Foundational Learning Journalism Initiative 2026. An estimated 9 out of 10 children in sub-Saharan Africa cannot read for meaning or do simple math by age 10. The evidence of what works to improve learning outcomes is known, and political will is growing – but not enough countries are implementing reforms at scale. More must be done through African journalism to embed this issue in the public consciousness.

ICFJ+ is seeking journalists and content creators in Kenya, Senegal and South Africa to join an initiative that will equip them with the knowledge, skills and networks to produce data-driven, solutions-oriented reporting on foundational literacy and numeracy.

Benefits

  • Up to 15 fellows will receive reporting grants, individual mentorship, story production support over a 6-month period, along with study tour opportunities and training on education data and pedagogy.

Eligibility

  • Journalists working for a news outlet or as freelancers and content creators and social media influencers based in Kenya, Senegal or South Africa are eligible to apply.
  • Strong candidates will demonstrate experience covering education, social policy or development (preferred but not required), a clear view of what is missing from current coverage of foundational learning in their country, and a commitment to reaching policymakers, educators, and affected communities – not just publishing stories.

Application

Applications are accepted in English and French until May 10, 2026 at 11:59 pm EST.
