The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has opened the RISE Worldwide 2027 call for internship offers from accredited universities and non-profit research institutions. The initiative provides research institutions with an opportunity to host talented German undergraduate students for research internships while contributing to international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Researchers whose institutions meet the programme requirements can submit internship projects through the RISE Worldwide internship database. Successful student applicants receive a DAAD scholarship to undertake a research stay within the host researcher’s working group.
About RISE Worldwide
RISE Worldwide connects German students with research opportunities at universities and non-profit research institutions outside Germany. The programme is intended for students studying fields including engineering, natural and earth sciences, medicine, computer science and related disciplines.
Host researchers can propose suitable research projects that provide students with practical experience in an academic or research environment. The selected students undertake research-related activities under the guidance of the host working group.
For participating institutions, the programme offers an opportunity to strengthen international research collaboration while providing students with exposure to different academic systems, research methodologies and professional environments.
Who Can Submit an Internship Offer?
Internship offers may be submitted by researchers from accredited universities and non-profit research institutions.
The proposed project should provide an appropriate research experience for a German student from an eligible academic discipline. Researchers and institutions considering participation should ensure that their proposed internship has clearly defined research objectives, appropriate supervision arrangements and meaningful tasks for the intern.
The programme is particularly relevant to research groups seeking to engage students in practical research projects within engineering, natural sciences, earth sciences, medicine, computer science or related areas.
How the RISE Internship Works
Researchers interested in hosting an intern must submit a project offer through the RISE Worldwide Internship Database.
Once projects are entered into the database, eligible German students can review available opportunities and apply for projects that match their academic interests and qualifications.
A successful applicant receives a DAAD scholarship to support the research stay. The student then joins the host researcher’s working group and undertakes the agreed research activities under appropriate academic supervision.
The arrangement allows students to gain international research experience while giving host institutions access to motivated emerging researchers from Germany.
Project Description Requirements
Researchers submitting an internship offer must prepare a concise project description. The description should be no longer than one page and must be uploaded in PDF format.
The project description should clearly include the researcher’s name and contact information, as well as the webpage of the relevant institute. Including complete contact information is important because applicants may need to identify and revisit project information within the internship database.
The project description should address several essential elements.
It should explain the scientific research questions that the project will investigate and provide an overview of the proposed experimental approach or research methodology.
Researchers should also outline the potential tasks of the intern, giving prospective applicants a clear understanding of the practical work they may undertake during the internship.
In addition, the description should provide general information about the research group, university and region. This contextual information can help students understand the academic environment and location in which they would complete their research stay.
2027 Submission Timeline
Research institutions interested in participating in RISE Worldwide 2027 must submit their internship offers during the designated submission period.
The deadline for submitting project offers is 15 August to 30 September 2026.
After student applications have been received, internship providers will have an opportunity to rank applicants between 13 January and 24 January 2027.
Researchers should therefore prepare their project descriptions and institutional information in advance to ensure that submissions are completed within the official application window.
How to Submit an Offer
Researchers should register through the RISE Worldwide Internship Database and submit their project offer through the provider portal.
The project should be carefully prepared according to the programme’s requirements, with particular attention given to the research question, methodology, prospective intern responsibilities and information about the host institution and region.
A clear and informative project description can help prospective applicants understand the research opportunity and determine whether it aligns with their academic interests and skills.
Opportunity for International Research Collaboration
RISE Worldwide provides participating research institutions with an opportunity to strengthen international academic engagement while supporting the development of the next generation of researchers.
By hosting a German student through a DAAD-supported research stay, institutions can expose emerging scholars to their research environment, contribute to international knowledge exchange and potentially establish longer-term academic connections.
The programme can be particularly valuable for research groups with well-defined projects that require additional research support and can provide meaningful supervision and practical learning opportunities.
Eligible researchers and institutions interested in hosting an intern in summer 2027 are encouraged to prepare their project descriptions and submit offers through the RISE Worldwide database before 30 September 2026.
