About the Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship

Jane Street is a quantitative trading firm that applies mathematical reasoning, statistics, computer science, machine learning, and other technical disciplines to complex problems in global financial markets.

Its Graduate Research Fellowship supports doctoral researchers whose work demonstrates technical excellence, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to rigorous research. Applicants do not need to focus their research directly on finance or trading to be considered.

The programme recognises the value of fundamental research and encourages applications from students working on challenging problems across the eligible disciplines.

Fellowship Benefits and Financial Support

1. Full tuition and fee coverage

Successful fellows will receive coverage of their full tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year. The fellowship is intended to support doctoral study at an eligible institution, with payment arrangements coordinated with the university where necessary.

2. US$50,000 stipend

Each fellow will receive a stipend of US$50,000, or its equivalent in local currency, to assist with living expenses while pursuing doctoral research. The stipend is taxable and may be subject to withholding taxes.

3. US$5,000 finalist award

Finalists will receive a separate monetary award of US$5,000.

4. Research networking and professional exposure

Fellows will be invited, but not required, to visit a Jane Street office to present a talk on a topic of their choice to employees and other fellowship recipients. Jane Street will cover the expenses associated with this visit.

The fellowship provides an opportunity to share research, engage with technically oriented professionals, and connect with other doctoral researchers.

Eligible Fields of Study

Applications are welcomed from PhD students conducting research in the following areas:

  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Including relevant areas of computing, systems, and engineering research.
  • Mathematics: Research involving theoretical, applied, or computational mathematical methods.
  • Physics: Fundamental or applied research addressing complex scientific problems.
  • Statistics: Statistical theory, methodology, modelling, and related quantitative research.

Students whose work relates to programming languages and compilers may also wish to explore Jane Street’s separate Tools and Compilers Research Internship.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the fellowship’s academic and institutional requirements.

Academic status

Eligible candidates must either:

  • Be PhD students with at least one year remaining in an eligible doctoral programme; or
  • Have committed to commencing a PhD programme at a specified university in Fall 2027.

Eligible institutions and locations

Recipients must remain active, full-time PhD students in good academic standing at an accredited, degree-granting research institution in one of the following locations:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Europe
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore

Applicants must maintain the required academic status for the duration of the academic year covered by the award. Otherwise, the fellowship may be forfeited. Deferrals due to medical reasons or other exceptional circumstances may be considered individually.

International applicants

International students are explicitly eligible and encouraged to apply, provided they meet the programme’s academic and institutional requirements.

The announcement does not restrict eligibility to a particular nationality.

Required Application Documents

Applicants should prepare the following materials before submitting their applications.

1. Curriculum vitae or résumé

Provide an up-to-date CV outlining academic qualifications, research experience, publications, technical skills, and relevant achievements.

2. Research statement

Submit a brief explanation of current research or the proposed research direction. The statement should be accessible to a general audience with mathematical or technical knowledge, rather than written exclusively for specialists in the applicant’s field.

Jane Street suggests a statement of approximately one to two pages, although longer submissions are acceptable when necessary.

Applicants should clearly communicate the research question, its significance, the methods being explored, and the potential contribution to the field.

3. Recommendation letter contacts

Provide contact information for the individuals who will recommend the applicant. Jane Street will contact the nominated letter writers directly to obtain their recommendations.

Applicants should notify their referees in advance so that they can anticipate the request and submit their letters before the deadline.

How to Apply for the Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship

Follow these steps to submit a complete application:

  1. Review the official fellowship requirements and confirm eligibility based on doctoral status, research discipline, and institution.
  2. Prepare a clear and concise academic CV highlighting relevant research achievements.
  3. Write a research statement explaining the proposed or ongoing work in language accessible to technically inclined readers outside the immediate specialisation.
  4. Identify appropriate academic referees and obtain their permission to provide recommendation letters.
  5. Complete the online application through Jane Street’s official fellowship application portal.
  6. Ensure that all required information is accurate and submit the application by 13 November 2026, AoE.
  7. Remind referees to submit their recommendations by 1 December 2026, AoE. Letters may also be submitted proactively to graduate-research-fellowship@janestreet.com.

Applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process can contact the fellowship team at graduate-research-fellowship@janestreet.com.

Tips for Strengthening Your Application

A strong application should explain the research clearly, demonstrate intellectual independence, and show why the work is technically meaningful.

Applicants should focus on the central research problem, the methods being developed or applied, and the contribution the research could make to its field. Avoid relying entirely on specialised terminology that may make the statement difficult for readers outside the applicant’s immediate research area to understand.

The CV should highlight relevant publications, research projects, awards, and technical accomplishments. Applicants should also choose referees who can provide detailed assessments of their research ability, academic performance, and potential.

Because recommendation letters have a later deadline than student applications, candidates should plan ahead and communicate with referees early.

Important Application Dates

  • 13 November 2026: Student application deadline.
  • 1 December 2026: Recommendation letter deadline.
  • February 2027: Expected fellowship award notifications.

All deadlines are based on Anywhere on Earth (AoE) time. Applicants should verify the applicable deadline and submit materials early to avoid time-zone or technical issues.
