The Enhanced Weathering Africa Partnership (EWAP) has opened applications for its EWAP Research Fellowship Programme, a selective 12-week learning and research programme designed to help develop Africa’s next generation of enhanced weathering researchers.
The programme is primarily online and will bring together up to 10 emerging researchers from different academic and professional disciplines. Fellows will learn from EWAP researchers and guest experts, develop practical research skills, receive mentoring and feedback, and connect with an expanding Africa-centred research community.
The fellowship is particularly relevant to researchers interested in the links between enhanced weathering, climate change, agriculture, sustainability and African development priorities.
Who Can Apply?
EWAP welcomes Expressions of Interest from:
- Final-year undergraduate students
- Master’s students
- PhD candidates
- Early-career researchers
The programme is interdisciplinary and welcomes applicants from fields that can contribute to enhanced weathering research in African contexts.
Relevant areas include environmental and climate science, agriculture, soil science, geochemistry, engineering, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), sustainability, economics, business, supply chains, policy and governance, carbon markets and climate finance.
Applicants from related disciplines may also be considered where their expertise can contribute meaningfully to research on enhanced weathering in Africa.
What the Fellowship Covers
The 12-week programme is structured to take participants from foundational knowledge through to developing their own research contribution.
Weeks 1–3: Research Foundations
Fellows will explore the fundamentals of enhanced weathering, African research contexts and research questions spanning science, policy and society.
Weeks 4–6: Evidence and Research Practice
Participants will develop skills in critical reading, research design and evaluating the evidence required for credible enhanced weathering research.
Weeks 7–9: Systems and Implementation
The programme will examine soils and agronomy alongside MRV, logistics, sustainability, policy, finance and responsible implementation.
Weeks 10–12: From Learning to Contribution
The final phase will focus on mentoring, collaborative work, group presentations, reflection and planning future research activities.
Mentoring and Research Community
Fellows will participate in expert-led sessions, practical exercises, peer collaboration and mentoring. They will also receive feedback designed to help them develop research ideas that could potentially contribute to publications, research proposals and collaborative projects.
The programme is intended to create connections across disciplines and support the development of an Africa-centred international research network focused on enhanced weathering.
Funding and Benefits
There is no application fee or participation fee for the EWAP Research Fellowship Programme.
However, the fellowship is unpaid and primarily online. It does not provide a salary, stipend or travel funding. Participation also does not guarantee future employment, paid opportunities or research funding with EWAP.
Fellows who successfully complete the programme requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion.
How to Apply
The application process begins with an Expression of Interest (EOI). Applicants are asked to provide information about their academic or professional background, research interests and motivation for joining the fellowship.
Applicants can also indicate whether they would like to attend the EWAP Information Webinar and submit questions for the EWAP team.
Following the EOI stage, selected applicants will be invited to complete the full application.
The EOI opens on 1 October 2026, with the deadline set for 6 November 2026.
Key Application Dates
- EOI opens: 1 October 2026
- Information Webinar: 23 October 2026, 13:00–14:00 UK time
- EOI deadline: 6 November 2026
- Full application invitations: 13 November 2026
- Full application deadline: 27 November 2026
- Outcomes communicated: 14 December 2026
- Acceptance deadline: 14 December 2026
- Cohort onboarding: January 2027
- Fellowship programme: February–April 2027
How to Successfully Apply
Applicants should use the Expression of Interest to clearly demonstrate their academic or professional background, research interests and motivation for exploring enhanced weathering in African contexts.
A strong application should establish a clear connection between the applicant’s discipline and the programme’s research themes. Applicants should also explain how participation could strengthen their research skills and contribute to their longer-term academic or professional goals.
Candidates should review the EWAP Research Fellowship Launch Pack carefully before completing the EOI and should ensure that all requested information is accurate and concise.
Why the EWAP Fellowship Is Valuable
Enhanced weathering is an emerging area of climate and environmental research with connections to soil systems, carbon removal, agriculture, climate finance, policy and sustainability.
For African researchers, the EWAP programme offers an opportunity to develop knowledge and research skills around the application of enhanced weathering in African contexts while engaging with researchers and peers from different disciplines.
The fellowship can also provide participants with mentoring, collaborative research experience, exposure to international experts and access to a growing research community.
