Researchers, faculty members, master’s students and recent graduates in Portugal can apply for the CMU Portugal 2027 Mobility Initiatives, which offer up to 24 scholarships for research visits to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, USA.

Supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) through the CMU Portugal Program, the mobility calls provide opportunities for eligible participants to spend between two weeks and four months at Carnegie Mellon University during 2027.

The calls cover two initiatives: the Visiting Faculty & Researchers Program, offering up to 10 grants, and the Visiting Students Program, offering up to 14 opportunities. Both initiatives focus on research, innovation and education in information and communication technologies (ICT).

Applications open on 15 September 2026 and close on 15 November 2026.

CMU Portugal 2027 Mobility Opportunities

The CMU Portugal Program is designed to strengthen collaboration between Portuguese higher education and research institutions and Carnegie Mellon University.

The 2027 mobility initiatives provide selected participants with the opportunity to undertake research visits at CMU, collaborate with leading academics and researchers, and gain exposure to Carnegie Mellon’s research environment and academic practices.

Visits can last from two weeks to four months, depending on the programme and approved research plan.

The two available initiatives are aimed at different applicant groups.

Visiting Faculty & Researchers Program

The CMU Portugal Visiting Faculty & Researchers Program will support up to 10 grantees for research visits to Carnegie Mellon University.

Successful applicants will spend between two weeks and four months at CMU, collaborating with peers in areas related to research, education and innovation in ICT.

The initiative is open to Portuguese citizens and foreign citizens who hold permanent residence in Portugal.

Applicants must also hold a doctoral degree by the time of application and must be affiliated with a Portuguese higher education institution or research laboratory.

The programme provides an opportunity for established researchers and faculty members to develop international collaborations, work with CMU colleagues and gain experience within the university’s research and innovation environment.

The initiative builds on the CMU Portugal Faculty Exchange Program, which was launched in 2007. According to CMU Portugal, the programme has supported 107 visits to Carnegie Mellon University to date.

Visiting Students Program

The CMU Portugal Visiting Students Initiative will provide up to 14 opportunities for master’s students or recent graduates in ICT-related fields.

Participants can conduct research at Carnegie Mellon University for periods ranging from two weeks to four months.

The programme is intended to provide hands-on research experience and allow participants to work directly with leading Carnegie Mellon faculty while experiencing the university’s academic culture.

To qualify, applicants must be Portuguese citizens or permanent residents of Portugal.

For recent graduates, the relevant degree must have been awarded in Portugal within the five years preceding the application. The opportunity is specifically aimed at master’s students and recent graduates in ICT-related fields.

The Visiting Students Initiative builds on the Undergraduate Internship Program launched in 2014 and has supported 88 student visits to CMU through December 2026.
