What Will Volunteers Do?
The Public Relations and Projects volunteer will support Democracy International’s daily communications activities.

The volunteer will also research international developments related to direct and participatory democracy and help communicate these issues to wider audiences.
Another major responsibility will involve supporting the International Democracy Community, an online platform connecting people working on democracy and citizen participation around the world.
This can include mapping and contacting democracy activists, helping members create profiles, managing the platform’s backend, preparing newsletters and editing contributions from activists.
Volunteers may also help organise webinars focusing on democracy activism and citizen participation.
Project and Team Support
The role is not limited to communications.
Volunteers will also assist with European, international and local projects. This may involve supporting project implementation, coordinating activities with project partners and helping teams meet deadlines and deliverables.
They may contribute to partner coordination by maintaining communication with project partners and supporting effective collaboration.
The position also provides exposure to monitoring, evaluation and reporting. Volunteers can assist with collecting information about project progress and preparing reports for organisations such as the European Union and other relevant bodies.
Administrative responsibilities may include preparing documents, coordinating meetings and providing general support to the team.
Training and Professional Development
The programme includes a significant training component.
Every volunteer must participate in at least 25 days of workshops and seminars during their stay in Germany.
This includes approximately 12 seminar days covering introductory, intermediate and evaluation sessions, as well as opportunities to meet other volunteers participating in Germany.
Volunteers will also receive a German language course at the beginning of their stay and must participate in a five-day political seminar organised through Germany’s Federal Voluntary Service.
To support German-language development, volunteers are also entitled to two hours of leave per week to participate in additional voluntary activities in Cologne.
What Financial Support Is Provided?
One of the major attractions of this opportunity is that volunteers receive substantial support for their living and participation costs.
Each volunteer will receive €500 per month to cover food and personal expenses.
Democracy International will directly cover other costs, including:

Accommodation in Cologne
Accommodation will be provided in a shared household with another volunteer from South Africa and two European Solidarity Corps volunteers.
The accommodation consists of two apartments, each with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Each volunteer will have their own private bedroom.
This arrangement provides an opportunity to live alongside other international volunteers and experience a multicultural environment during the programme.
