The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) Seeks a Communications and Engagement Coordinator: Apply by 26 August

The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) is inviting applications for a Communications and Engagement Coordinator to support its environmental justice programmes, campaigns and advocacy work across Southern Africa.

The position is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and is suited to communications professionals with experience in digital storytelling, content creation, social media management and stakeholder engagement.

The successful candidate will play an important role in strengthening SAFCEI’s public communications, expanding its digital reach and communicating the impact of its work on climate justice, eco-justice and sustainable living.

About SAFCEI

The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) is a multi-faith environmental justice organisation working across Southern Africa. The organisation supports faith leaders, green champions and communities to build awareness, develop skills and take action on environmental and climate justice issues.

The Communications and Engagement Coordinator will help amplify this work through strategic communications across digital platforms, media engagement, campaigns and partnerships.

The role combines communications strategy, content production, social media management, website administration, storytelling and stakeholder engagement. It offers an opportunity for a communications professional to use creative skills in support of environmental and social justice.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications and Engagement Coordinator will develop and coordinate communications plans for SAFCEI’s programmes, campaigns and projects. The successful candidate will work closely with teams and partners to ensure that communications activities effectively support organisational objectives.

A major part of the position involves creating compelling content for different audiences and platforms. This includes producing media releases, articles, blog posts, success stories, educational materials and campaign resources.

The Coordinator will also design digital communications materials while ensuring that SAFCEI maintains consistent branding, messaging and visual standards across its communications.

Website management will form another important component of the role. The successful candidate will update website content relating to programmes, projects, news, events, campaigns and available resources.

The Coordinator will also develop monthly content calendars and manage SAFCEI’s online communities. This includes engaging with followers, responding to emerging issues and identifying opportunities to increase the organisation’s digital reach.

The role will involve capturing and curating photographs, videos and stories that demonstrate the impact of SAFCEI’s work across Southern Africa.

Other responsibilities include supporting communications for campaigns, events, workshops and partnerships; building relationships with media organisations, partners, faith communities and civil society organisations; and monitoring communications performance.

The successful candidate will use analytics and reporting tools to evaluate audience engagement and campaign performance, produce monthly reports and recommend improvements based on the results.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Media Studies, Digital Communications or a related discipline.

SAFCEI is looking for candidates with approximately three to five years of experience in communications, content creation, website management and social media.

Applicants should have a strong understanding of social media platforms and digital engagement, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube. Familiarity with Google Analytics and social media algorithms will also be valuable.

Candidates should have excellent writing, editing and storytelling abilities, together with strong organisational and time-management skills. The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines is important for the position.

Experience with Canva is required, while familiarity with Google Workspace applications such as Sheets and Docs and Microsoft Office programmes including Excel and Word is also expected.

Basic photography and video editing skills would be beneficial. Applicants with experience using project management platforms such as Monday.com or similar tools are also encouraged to apply.

Additional Requirements

The ideal candidate should have an understanding of the non-profit organisation sector, particularly environmental justice, eco-justice and ethical governance.

Because SAFCEI takes a multi-faith approach to its work, candidates should demonstrate an appreciation for and commitment to working across different faith communities.

A valid, unendorsed driver’s licence is also required.

Beyond technical qualifications, SAFCEI is seeking someone who is creative, organised, collaborative and passionate about using communications to support environmental and climate justice.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a short motivation of no more than one page explaining who they are and why they are interested in the Communications and Engagement Coordinator position.

Applications should include:
