Applications are open for the Climate, Food and Farming, Global Research Alliance Development Scholarships (CLIFF-GRADS) Programme 2026. The CLIFF-GRADS Programme is a joint initiative of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), the Global Methane Hub, and CGIAR Climate Action Program. CLIFF-GRADS builds capability in early-career scientists from developing countries to conduct applied research in agriculture greenhouse gas emissions quantification and mitigation.

Successful applicants to the CLIFF-GRADS programme will go on short term (4-6 month) research stays at a host institution and will:

  • Gain experience in the measurement, modelling and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon storage in agricultural systems relevant to developing countries;
  • Build networks and experience other cultures; and
  • Gain access to equipment and methodologies used by other institutions.

Benefits

  • Grants of $14,000 USD will be awarded to PhD students from developing countries for research stays that will be started before the end of 2026.

Eligibility

They invite PhD students who meet the following criteria to apply:

  • From developing countries;
  • Undertaking their PhD in a University in a developing country; and
  • Who have not previously been awarded a CLIFF-GRADS grant.

Application

Applicants must complete the CLIFF-GRADS Round 7 online application form and submit the following necessary documentation merged into a single PDF file. Applications must be in English and applications that are in any other language will not be accepted.

  • 1 page motivation letter (described below)
  • 1-page academic curriculum vitae (CV / Resume) that includes your contact details
  • Letter of support from your PhD supervisor at your current university
