Local climbing organisations invited to apply for up to $1,000 in funding for sustainable climbing area projects
Community-led climbing organisations around the world are being invited to apply for environmental grants aimed at protecting climbing areas, restoring ecosystems, and promoting responsible outdoor recreation.
The Global Climbing Initiative (GCI) has opened applications for its Environmental Grants programme, which supports locally driven projects that improve the sustainability of climbing environments and strengthen community stewardship.
The grants provide up to $1,000 USD for eligible projects outside the continental United States, as well as projects led by Indigenous communities within the United States.
The current grant cycle opens applications from 6 July to 24 July 2026.
Grants support conservation and responsible climbing initiatives
The Global Climbing Initiative’s Environmental Grants are designed to help climbing communities protect natural areas while ensuring that climbing can continue responsibly for future generations.
The programme focuses on projects that address environmental challenges connected to climbing, including conservation, restoration, education, and sustainable recreation.
Successful projects should demonstrate:
- Clear environmental benefits
- Strong local leadership
- Community involvement
- Measurable conservation outcomes
- Long-term impact beyond the grant period
The initiative encourages climbing communities to develop solutions based on local needs and environmental priorities.
Eligible projects include restoration, cleanups and stewardship activities
The Environmental Grants programme supports practical conservation projects that directly improve climbing areas and surrounding ecosystems.
Examples of eligible activities include:
- Trail construction and restoration
- Crag cleanups and habitat restoration
- Erosion prevention and mitigation
- Leave No Trace education programmes
- Waste management improvements
- Sanitation projects at climbing locations
- Other initiatives supporting sustainable climbing environments
Projects must be connected to climbing and led by a local climbing organisation with demonstrated climbing-related impact.
Who can apply for the environmental funding?
To qualify, projects must meet specific eligibility requirements.
Applicants must:
- Be related to indoor or outdoor climbing
- Be led by a local climbing organisation
- Be proposed by a local leader within the climbing organisation
- Take place outside the continental United States, unless led by an Indigenous community
Applications are also subject to compliance and risk assessments.
Previous grant recipients may apply under different grant categories or after sitting out one funding cycle.
Funding prioritises direct conservation activities
The Global Climbing Initiative prioritises proposals with realistic plans, clear budgets, and strong community involvement.
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Alignment with environmental grant objectives
- Local ownership and stewardship
- Defined environmental goals and outcomes
- Feasible implementation plans
- Organisational capacity to complete the project
- Long-term environmental benefits
- A clear and practical budget
Grant funds should focus primarily on direct project activities rather than administrative expenses.
Projects that cannot receive funding
Certain activities are excluded from the Environmental Grants programme.
Funding cannot support:
- Projects located in the continental United States unless led by Indigenous communities
- Activities unrelated to climbing or environmental stewardship
- Academic research projects, conferences, or white papers

- Salaries, stipends, or general operating expenses
- Promotional merchandise such as branded clothing or participant items
Projects seeking climbing equipment as their main objective are encouraged to apply through the organisation’s Gear Distribution Program instead.

Grant recipients will be required to complete several steps after selection.
Grant partners must:
- Attend a grant finalist meeting
- Sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU)
- Agree to a code of conduct and photography agreement
- Recognise GCI as a supporter in public project communications
Within 60 days of completing the project, recipients must submit:
