University of Copenhagen Scholarships 2027: Applications Open for African Students

Students enrolled at the University of Rwanda (UR) or the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) have an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in Denmark through the GeoAI for Land Systems Science partnership.

The initiative brings together the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, the University of Rwanda, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to strengthen education, research collaboration, and academic mobility in geospatial artificial intelligence and land systems science.

Under the 2027 scholarship call, seven full 22-month scholarships have been announced for students beginning their studies in September 2027. The application deadline is 15 November 2026.

The wider partnership plans to award 51 scholarships through 2030, including 31 full-degree scholarships and 20 exchange scholarships for eligible students from Rwanda and Southern Africa.

For students interested in climate science, computer science, geography, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence, the initiative offers an opportunity to develop advanced technical skills while studying in an international academic environment.

What Is the GeoAI for Land Systems Science Partnership?

The GeoAI for Land Systems Science partnership is an international university collaboration designed to train a new generation of researchers and professionals capable of addressing complex environmental and land-management challenges.

Land systems across Africa and other regions face increasing pressure from climate change, deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity. Addressing these challenges requires reliable environmental data, advanced monitoring technologies, and evidence-based decision-making.

Geospatial artificial intelligence combines artificial intelligence with geographic information systems, satellite imagery, remote sensing, and other spatial datasets. These technologies can help researchers analyse changes in landscapes, monitor environmental conditions, and develop more effective approaches to sustainable land management.

Through this partnership, the participating universities aim to strengthen research capacity, develop innovative teaching programmes, expand academic mobility, and build lasting research networks between Africa and Europe.

The programme is supported through the Danida Knowledge & Innovation Programme and is designed to promote long-term academic collaboration.

What Scholarships Are Available?

The wider initiative includes two main categories of scholarships.

1. Full-Degree Scholarships

Full-degree scholarships support eligible students pursuing master’s studies at the University of Copenhagen.

The 2027 call advertises seven full scholarships with a 22-month study period beginning in September 2027.

The partnership provides access to three existing master’s programmes spanning geography and geoinformatics, computer science, and climate change. The exact programme available to an applicant depends on the official call and admission requirements.

Students should review the scholarship documentation carefully to establish which tuition, living, travel, insurance, and other expenses are covered. The precise benefits should not be assumed without confirmation from the official funding terms.

2. Exchange Scholarships

The partnership also provides opportunities for eligible students to participate in academic
