Amnesty International is inviting applications for an Investigator, Arms and Armed Conflict position within its Crisis Response programme. The role is based in London, Mexico City, Dakar, Nairobi or Johannesburg, with London identified as the preferred location.
The successful candidate will work within Amnesty International’s Evidence Lab and collaborate with regional offices, research teams, thematic specialists, legal advisers and communications colleagues to investigate weapons, armed conflict, military and security-force operations, arms transfers and emerging forms of warfare.
Position Overview
The Investigator, Arms and Armed Conflict will lead and contribute to multidisciplinary investigations examining the human rights and international humanitarian law implications of weapons and military operations.
A significant component of the position will involve researching developments in modern warfare, including remote and autonomous weapons, hybrid warfare, artificial intelligence-enabled military technologies and evolving targeting systems.
The role will also support investigations into responsibility for serious human rights violations. This can involve identifying individuals, military and security-force units, law enforcement bodies, companies, suppliers and other relevant actors through rigorous research and evidence analysis.
The position requires advanced knowledge of weapons and armed conflict, combined with strong digital investigation, open-source research, analytical and writing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with Amnesty International’s regional and thematic teams to identify and develop investigations concerning weapons, military operations, security forces, law enforcement, arms transfers and changing forms of warfare.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting and supporting complex multidisciplinary investigations.
- Monitoring conflicts, technological developments, digital evidence and emerging human rights concerns.
- Preparing reports, briefings, press releases and multimedia research outputs.
- Translating technically complex findings into clear and accessible material.
- Working with researchers, legal specialists and policy advisers to ensure findings are grounded in international human rights and humanitarian law.
- Developing strong editorial and communications approaches for investigations.
- Collaborating with communications, campaigns and design teams to transform research findings into media, multimedia and social media content.
- Providing specialist advice on weapons identification, attack reconstruction, attribution, responsibility and military operations.
- Supporting research into arms transfers, supply chains and the misuse of law-enforcement equipment.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have substantial professional experience conducting complex investigations involving weapons, armed conflict, military operations, security forces, law enforcement, arms transfers or related public-interest issues.
Amnesty International is particularly interested in candidates with experience in human rights documentation, investigative journalism or comparable research environments.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Advanced digital investigation and research skills.
- A strong portfolio of complex digital investigations or research projects.
- Advanced knowledge of firearms, explosive ordnance and less-lethal weapons.
- Practical experience identifying weapons and ordnance from visual and documentary evidence.
- Understanding of weapons employment, explosive effects and relevant military or law-enforcement doctrine.
- Experience investigating weapons use, attack reconstruction, attribution and responsibility.
- Knowledge of military operations, arms transfers and supply chains.
- Experience investigating emerging military technologies.
- Experience researching lethal and less-lethal law-enforcement equipment and its misuse.
Strong research, analytical, writing and communication skills are essential for the position.
Location and Working Hours
The preferred location is London, although Amnesty International will also consider candidates based in Dakar, Johannesburg, Mexico City and Nairobi.
The position involves 35 working hours per week. Salary will depend on the successful candidate’s location.
For the London location, the advertised salary is GBP 65,610 per year.
